What Is Tapping?


Tapping is not some new-age technique to relieve stress. It’s been adopted throughout history from ancient cultures. Let’s get into what the protocol is and just how it works.

Based on the theories ofEnergy Psychology” and Emotional Freedom Technique, is a form of “psychological Acupressure.” Tapping has been proven effective in clinical treatment protocol as well as for use at home.

Energy psychology focuses on the Limbic System or the Emotional Body which responds to the stimuli of the nervous system. When the nervous system is able to be calmed, the body and mind both respond to reduced stress, opening up neural pathways to achieve the maximum efficiency and function.

How Does It Work?

Through modified ancient techniques in Chinese Medicine, EFT Tapping can be achieved by focusing on 9 energetic meridian points. There are some steps to it, so it’s important to follow them. You can find a full guide, here.

Emotional freedom technique has been known to be an alternative method of treatment for emotional distress and physical discomforts. It is thought that those who choose to use this technique are creating balance in their energetic systems, which according to Gary Craig, “Energy disturbances are the cause of all negative emotions and pain.

Although it is still under research, EFT tapping has been used as an alternative healing method to treat people with PTSD and anxiety.

Based on Chinese Medicine, meridian points are thought of as areas of the body energy flows through. These pathways help balance energy flow to maintain your health. Any imbalance can influence disease or sickness.

Acupuncture uses small needles to apply specific pressure to these energy points. EFT uses fingertip tapping to apply pressure, which is much like acupressure.

Healers say the tapping helps you access your body’s stored energy and sends signals to the part of the brain that controls stress and interprets emotion. They claim that stimulating the meridian points through EFT tapping will ultimately restore balance to your disrupted energy processes.

What’s The Technique?

 The process and techniques of EFT tapping can be divided into five steps. When dealing with more than one issue to relieve, the steps can be repeated several times.

1.    Identify The Blockage or Issue You’re Wanting Relief From

To perform this technique most effectively, you must first identify the issue or fear you have and wish to resolve. This knowledge and acceptance of it will be your focal point while you’re tapping. Staying present and focused on only one problem at a time is helpful to reaching your outcome goal.

2.    Find Your Intensity Threshold

Once your problem area has been identified, you will need to set a threshold level of intensity. Your intensity level is rated on a standard scale from 0 to 10, with 10 being the worst or most difficult. The scale appropriately evaluates the emotional stress or physical discomfort that you are feeling from your focal issue.

When you establish a benchmark, it becomes easier to monitor your progress after performing a completed EFT sequence. In example, if your initial intensity was 10 prior to tapping and ended at 5, you have now reached a 50 percent level of improvement! Way to go!

3. Setting Up Your Mind

Prior to beginning tapping, you will want to create a phrase that explains what you’re trying to address. This phrase must focus on two primary goals:

  1. Acknowledging what needs healing
  2. Accepting where you are at today, regardless of the problem.

A particularly common setup phrase is:Even though I have this [fear or problem], I deeply and completely accept myself.”

4. Learning The EFT Sequence

The EFT tapping sequence is simply known as, “The methodic tapping on the ends of nine meridian points.”

In Chinese medicine, there are 12 major meridians that mirror both sides of the body and correspond to an internal organ. However, EFT mostly focuses on these nine:

  • under the arm (UA): spleen meridian
  • karate chop (KC): small intestine meridian
  • chin (Ch): central vessel
  • under the nose (UN): governing vessel
  • side of the eye (SE): gallbladder meridian
  • top of head (TH): governing vessel
  • eyebrow (EB): bladder meridian
  • under the eye (UE): stomach meridian
  • beginning of the collarbone (CB): kidney meridian

When you start your EFT sequence, you’ll begin by tapping the karate chop point while simultaneously saying your mantra or phrase aloud three times. You will then, tap each of the following points seven times, moving down the body in this exact, ascending order:

  1. eyebrow
  2. side of the eye
  3. under the eye
  4. under the nose
  5. chin
  6. beginning of the collarbone
  7. under the arm

When you have finished tapping the underarm point, you may complete the sequence at the top of the head point.
